Transporting and handling casing on reels has the following advantages for the customer:

More cost effective
Increased safety
Better utilisation of crane capacity
Less offshore casing problems
Reduced number of possible accidents due to the absence of loose tubulars
Better well control due to the continuous feeding of casing from a reel, with automatic casing fill up device
High casing speeds due to active mud volume control and very limited connection time. 5,000 ft/hr is technically possible and even higher speeds are being considered.
Reduced number of equipment to lift the tubulars in vertical position
Fully protected transportation and storage of tubulars up to the moment that the tubulars are needed.

The reeling of shortens the time of pipe handling. A part of this handling can be done ashore. Also the transportation of the casing is easier. The Reeling system consists of a:

Tensioner
Straightners & Guide wheel
Reel with drive unit (see picture below)

The reeling system can be used to lower casings into the well. The system can also be used for tie-back operations and other pipe-laying activities using reeled tubulars. The reeling concept is an important part of the optimized tubular handling system reducing down time on a drilling rig.

Huisman-Itrec gained experience with pipe reeling systems through the design of a multiple pipelay system on deepwater pipe lay vessels. All components for the pipe lay vessel were constructed and commissioned at the Huisman-Itrec yard in Schiedam.
